Central Sericultural Research & Training Institute (CSRTI), Mysore, the pioneer research institution in the field of sericulture, was established at Chennapattana in 1961, under the administrative control of Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India for the over all development of silk industry in the country. During the course of development the Institute was shifted to Mysore the princely city in the year 1963.
Over the years the Institute has grown in to a full pledged centre of excellence and provided commendable support to enhance silk productivity and quality ensuring generation of higher income for the farmers.
Vision:
To be a model organization second to none in the country for providing R & D services in sericulture to rural development, upliftment and generation of human resources both at Domestic and International level.
Mission:
- Generate Pro-environment, Pro-poor and Pro-women technologies for improvement of silk production in the country.
- Work for the improvement of field productivity through low cost innovative technologies for state-of-art services as well as for overall improvement of socio-economic conditions of sericulturists, who are by and large the rural poor.
Mandate:
- To develop technologies pertaining to all aspects of mulberry sericulture suitable to different agro climatic conditions/ zones of South India.
- To conduct basic and applied research in various disciplines leading to the development of appropriate technologies for qualitative and productivity improvement.
- To conduct training programmes and aid in human resource development in the country.
- To serve as a testing and certification centre for all mulberry sericulture industry related technologies, machineries, equipments and appliances etc.
- To coordinate with state governments, voluntary organizations, universities and other national and state institute for technology transfer.
Objectives and Strategies:
- Major objectives of the Institute are to:
- Conduct scientific, technical, economic and social research with respect to silk production.
- Serve as a centre for collection and dissemination of information and advise on scientific, technical and economic matters concerned to sericulture industry.
- Serve as a centre for specialized extension service to the sericulture industry.
- Undertake training of scientific, technical and extension personnel at the managerial and operational cadres.
- Conduct commercial research and production for effective promotion and utilization of different research findings.
- To this end the Institute endeavors to adopt the following strategies:
- Systematically identify the country’s current and long term scientific and technological needs in the field of sericulture.
- Develop higher levels of innovation and excellence in the field of sericulture technology.
- Diversify and commercialise the sericulture sector in to seribuisiness.
- Strengthen and enhance effectiveness of technology transfer and its adoption.

Location of CSRTI, Mysore
The CSRTI is located in the southern part of Mysore city on the H.D.Kote - Manandavadi Road at about 8 km from Railway Station. Mysore has a long illustrious history of being one of the major seats of learning in southern India. Apart from being the centre of advanced studies under University of Mysore, the city also houses a number of academic and research institutions of International repute. Mysore is situated at an altitude of 759.9m (2492 ft) above mean sea level, with latitude 12.18°N and longitude 76.42°E. Mysore receives an average rainfall of 710 mm with the temperature ranging between 33 °C and 18 °C. It is well connected to the important cities by rail and road. The nearest airport is at Bangalore, (the capital city of Karnataka), which is only 140 km away.
